Working with your hands to create something beautiful is like the original therapy. For ages, people have spent their relaxation time mending, carving, and stitching things. Today, most of what we use was made by a machine. Nearly everything we touch on a daily basis is seen as disposable – a great change from 100 years ago. When you make things yourself, your life changes.
No longer do you see everything as disposable when you know how many hours went into the making of an item. Making things by hand causes a person to learn patience. It also causes him or her to take better care of things.
Here, I’ll share the things we make and mend at home: everything from darning socks to creating gifts for our loved ones. When we create things, we don’t do it just as a hobby to fill time, but as a practical way to live out a simpler and more intentional life.
*Sewing: Simple sewing projects for daily use, such as pockets in a dress
*Crochet & Knitting: Work that is useful as well as decorative
*Embroidery: Stitches to bring new life to old garments and other items
*Mending & Repairing: fixing holes and tears rather than replacing
*Handmade Gifts: Creating handmade items as a way to support our working home
Most of what I share is built on simple skills I’ve been honing for the last twenty years. I’m no expert in any of these areas; I just enjoy crafting and creating.
You don’t need a fancy craft room or expensive tools. You probably already have a needle and thread – that’s basically all you need to get started!
I’ve found over the last decade of family life that the things in our home I love most are the unique, handmade items. What you sew or knit doesn’t have to impress anyone – it just needs to work for you and bring you joy.
